Community

We are committed to helping the communities of Durham and Orange Counties thrive, and we pride ourselves on our strong presence in these communities. We recognize that diversity among our members and the programming we support is critical to accomplishing our mission. We work with community partners and also do our own targeted volunteer projects that benefit different segments of the community, and we always have a great time working together to make a difference!

We’re Focused on What Matters Most Right Now in Durham and Orange Counties

At the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties (JLDOC) we live in the moment. To us, that means adjusting our focus according to our community’s most pressing needs. Our work is always evolving, and that keeps us on our toes, striving for progress, and preparing to take on whatever comes next.

Need a few extra hands for your event? One of the ways the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties supports other non-profit agencies in the community is by providing passionate, educated, professionally trained volunteers for one-day volunteer opportunities. We love participating in these one-time service events, which we call “Extra Hands” events, because they allow us to donate our time and skills where they are most needed while giving our members the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the challenges facing our community and working alongside the many different organizations that are working to confront these challenges

Please contact community@jldoc.org if you are interested in requesting volunteers for an event.

Healthy Living Initiative

Our current community focus of Healthy Living can be achieved by helping to increase physical and economic access to food alongside community partners. From late 2016 to 2020, JLDOC partnered with Farmer Foodshare to improve food access within the communities that we serve. To continue our Healthy Living focus in 2020, JLDOC has partnered with Root Causes to aid in their mission of healing the food system through education, outreach, community service, and advocacy.

Our goal is to help women develop civic leadership skills through the work they do, then put those talents to work in the communities that need it. Our current focus of Healthy Living gives women opportunities to grow, while positively impacting the communities where they live and work.

We’re Creating Fulfilling Leadership Opportunities Throughout Durham and Orange Counties

The JLDOC offers so much more than local volunteering opportunities! Our League of leaders creates real change by advancing social activism-focused projects that directly benefit the communities of Durham and Orange counties. By giving women the tools to lead, educating them about their communities’ needs, and helping them put their unique brand of creativity and skill to work, JLDOC is making a big impact on our community.

We’re Transforming Durham, Chapel Hill, and Surrounding Communities by Challenging the Status Quo

No matter what we’re currently focusing on, the JLDOC’s work centers around improving our local communities through effective action and leadership. We have identified healthy living as the most pressing issue in our community right now, and we are helping local women take action to resolve it.
